A Portrait of a Galaxy

APOD #3- The Sombrero Galaxy is in the constellation Virgo, approximately 28 million light years away from Earth. This photo was taken by the Hubble Telescope in space. 

APOD #2: Venus in Retrograde

Occasionally, Venus appears to be moving backwards in the sky. "Appears" is the key word here, because, technically speaking, no planet actually moves backwards in their orbits around the Sun. In fact, they don't even slow down. Retrogrades are essentially illusions that result from our point of view from Earth, simply because the Earth is also orbiting the Sun at a different speed than the other planets. Venus is Retrograde approximately 40-43 days every 18 months.

If you believe in astrology, be careful of what you try to do when Venus is in retrograde!

APOD, or astronomy photo of the day, takes a look at what is happening in the universe around us through photos. Submissions ARE WELCOME AND ENCOURAGED. A photo that qualifies is anything having to do with outside our atmosphere. Photos can be current, but don't have to be.
